The Equity Design Collaborative was formed in 2017 by organizations and individuals from across the U.S. practicing what we would later call Equity Design. The collaborative currently consists of six organizations varied in their intended beneficiaries and their scope, but similar in their missions. Our shared goal is create equitable outcomes for marginalized communities, particularly through bottom-up organizing and institutional culture transformation. Our work is inspired and informed by collective action and activist communities, including afrofuturism, emergent strategy, Black Lives Matter, and many more.

Why design? Our guiding principle is that systems of oppression, inequalities and inequities were created by design. Therefore, they can be redesigned. We aim to redesign and dismantle these systems using our equity design approach. We have designed tools to break the rules that have historically hindered the access and growth of oppressed communities.
